Here's a peek at six weeks of

Hollywood the Game's
Box Office Formula

(How the box office admin
figures out how much HTG
green your movie made)

Four statistics are taken into consideration when the box office formula is used:

Film Talent Score (FTS):  The Talent Scores of the director and top four actors/actresses in the movie are taken into consideration.

     FTS = ((Director's TS + 2*Lead actor's TS + Second actor's TS)/4)
                                                                            + (Third actor's TS + Fourth actor's TS)/10

Average Player Vote (PV):  The player votes for the week are simply averaged

Average Buzz Vote (BV):  The same applies here

Advertising (ADV):  The amount of cash used in advertising plus all of the bonuses from items, pets, film libraries, awards and such

Following are the current equations for the first six weeks of the box office formula.  Each movie in release has the above statistics plugged into the equation that corresponds with the week of release that the movie is in.  (There are more equations, but these first six weeks are the crucial weeks.)  For example, a film's opening week uses the first equation to come up with a figure.  A movie in it's fourth week would use the fourth equation.  (This is on an Excel worksheet to aid the game administrator who does this.)

The twenty results (for the twenty films in current release) are totaled.  Each film's result is then divided by that total to see what percent of the total it has.  That percentage is multiplied by the box office total of the top twenty films in real life for that week.  That is the amount of money that the HTG film receives for that week.

Example:  On its first week of release, Buster's Big Movie has the statistics plugged into the first week equation and comes up with a total of 60.  The total of the twenty films on their respective weeks is 420.  Buster's Big Movie gets 60/420, or roughly 14% of the real life top twenty box office.  If the real life top twenty earned $200 million, Buster's Big Movie opened up with around $28 million.

The administration realizes that the box office formula is not perfect and does keep an eye on it to see how well it reflects the success of movies in real life release.  The aim with the current formula is to reward Average Player Vote above other statistics.  Advertising and Average Buzz Vote will wane much sooner.

The equations for the first six weeks:

Week 1=(0.25*FTS+1*PV+0.8*(BV-3)+0.2+0.1*ADV)*(0.3*(ADV+BV))

Week 2=(0.25*FTS+1*PV+0.8*(BV-3)+0.2+0.1*ADV)*(0.3*(ADV+BV))

Week 3=(0.2*FTS+0.65*((PV+2)+BV-3)+0.2+0.1*ADV)*(0.2*(ADV+BV))

Week 4=(0.2*FTS+0.65*((PV+2)+BV-3)+0.2+0.1*ADV)*(0.2*(ADV+BV))

Week 5=(0.2*FTS+0.4*(PV+1)+0.2*(BV-5)+0.2+0.1*ADV)*(0.2*ADV+0.2*BV)

Week 6=(0.15*FTS+0.3*(PV-1)+0.2*(BV-5)+0.2+0.0667*ADV)*(0.15*ADV+0.1*BV)
