PEDRO Reviews TEMPLARS OF STEEL This was one of Teufel’s releases at Film-Mogul that was re-released here at HTG. I thought that I would review it again to see if it changed much. It’s been so long since I read this film at Film-Mogul though that this was like a new experience for me. PLOT: The plot consists of four Templars, Magnus (Daniel Day Lewis), Joacim (Tom Welling), Oskar (James Franco) and Stefan (Jensen Ackles) who are starting a revolution against the Marauder’s. The Templars were warriors set up to protect the king of Metallicus. However one of their own, Dronjak (Patrick Stewart) betrays them, gets rid of the king and takes over the kingdom. Along with him is Ravenlord (John Malcovich), who is basically his go to guy. He also keeps the other royal family hostage inside the kingdom. The Templars then revolt and once the royal family escapes the kingdom, a battle between the Templars and the Marauders ensues. Overall the Templars win out and the Royal family returns to balance. However it comes at a price as Magnus is seen dead by the end of the film. A lot of the time the plot is actually hard to follow at times toward the beginning but everything works out as the film goes on. We get some great flashback sequences and overall the plot was pretty interesting and creative. FINAL PLOT GRADE: 75/100 DIALOGUE: Not too bad. The dialogue could have been better but the dialogue seems substantial for this period of time. Some of the dialogue seems lengthy and could have been edited down a bit. I enjoyed most of the dialogue though between the four Templars. They really had great chemistry together as seen through their dialogue. I also liked Ravenlord’s dialogue as the annoyed jester to Dronjak. The dialogue isn’t one of the films strongest points but it still was pretty nice. FINAL DIALOGUE GRADE: 60/100 CHARACTERS: The characters were pretty good but the villains like Dronjak and Ravenlord seemed kind of cliched. Ravenlord may have had interesting dialogue but to me his character was pretty dull. The four main Templars though are pretty interesting characters and they play off each other well in the film. I think that Teufel is great at creating interesting characters in interesting stories and this film was really no exception. FINAL CHARACTERS GRADE: 70/100 CASTING: I thought that Ridley Scott was the perfect choice to direct this film as he is really great at directing pieces like this, period pieces. I really couldn’t see some of the young Templars in their roles and I thought that there was a million other young actors that could have pulled off those roles. I also am not the biggest fan of Jesse Metcalfe and I thought that the film would have sufficed if someone else played the role. Daniel Day-Lewis and Patrick Stewart are perfectly cast though. I thought that Monica Bellucci though was a little too young to play her role. FINAL CASTING GRADE: 60/100 PACING: The pacing was pretty good. There is some amazing action seen in this movie and some great flashback sequences that are all paced well. Teufel is great at describing and pacing action sequences that makes his films incredibly interesting. I think that he is one of the best at pacing his films here at HTG. I have to admit at some parts I was bored with the film but that was quickly sustained by great action and great scenes between the Templars. The pacing could have been better like any film, but this still was one well paced film. FINAL PACING GRADE: 85/100 ADVERTISING: Honestly, I wanted to see some more ads for the film. I was hoping that since this was a re-release that they may have made some new advertisements for the film, but that didn’t happen. Teufel still tried to advertise the film the best that he could. The site was one of the best seen at Film-Mogul and it still looks pretty cool here with HTG’s standards. I would have liked to have seen more advertisements though. I hope that Teufel advertises his next film well and I’m looking forward to his next ad campaign for his next film. FINAL ADVERTISING GRADE: 60/100 WRITING: I said that the plot was hard to follow at some times and I did notice more spelling and grammatical errors than I’ve noticed with Teufel’s other releases. Teufel though is great at describing sequences though that make for an interesting read. A script like this would be a director’s dream as its so visual. The characters also are pretty interesting and also make the rest of the story interesting. I think that Teufel is a very talented writer and this film proves it as does many of his other works. This to me by far isn’t his best work though. I really though can’t wait to read his next film here at HTG. FINAL WRITING GRADE: 70/100 FINAL OVERALL GRADE: 69/100
